New NIE Number Application Form Approved (July 2011)

July 14th, 2011

The Police Station has released today a public notice in which it states that a new NIE Number Application Form has been approved. This form can be downloaded from the Immigration Secretary of State’s website or at the bottom of this post.

This new NIE form is introduced as part of the modifications approved by the Royal Decree 557/2011, of the 20th April, of the Rules and Regulations or Rights of Foreigners in Spain and their social integration, after the reform approved in Law 2/2009, modifications which include the reduction of two years of residency for those who wish to legalize their status in Spain after having worked illegally in Spain, and the possibility for parents of children of Spanish citizenship to apply for their residency by family settlement.

With regards to NIE Numbers, the new law also mentions changes in the application process, specifically in which offices the NIE number can be applied for. It does not mention, however, if the NIE applications can be submitted by a representative on behalf of the applicant via a power of attorney, nor how long can it take to get an appointment at the consular office.

We confirm that we continue to offer our service as normal.

    Dear Mr. Gauthereau,

    Thank you for your comments.

Your NIE number certificate has been in our possession all along. Once it was ready, we sent you an e-mail to inform you of this. However it now seems that the e-mail you provided us with does not seem to be working as you have not been receiving our e-mails. Note that for security reasons we always keep the documents in our possession until our clients confirm the address they would like it to be sent to. I will give you a call straight away in order to inform you of this as well as to confirm the address you would like it to be sent to.

Our apologies for any inconvenience caused and once again, thank you for depositing your trust in us.

Unfortunately due to a new national government regulation, since the 4th of January 2012 we are no longer able to obtain NIE numbers by means of a power of attorney. Applicants are now required to request these in person at their nearest National police station in Spain of via their nearest Spanish Consulate in your country of residence. This last option is not ideal as in our experience they can take as long as three months. Probably it would be best for you to request it once you are in Ibiza. A local law firm or gestoria will be able to help you. If you came down this area we could request it on your behalf but I understand Ibiza is a long way and travelling here might not be convenient for you.

Yes of course. Note however that you will only be able to work with this NIE number in the event that you are a EU citizen. Non EU citizens will require the corresponding work and residence permit.
